Art makes a house alive and personal, I’m sure of that. Paintings and sculptures tell stories, delight the eye and create conversations.

I live just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, with wide open views and the best clouds in the world. I love the land, but it is the delight of interaction with other creatures - people and animals, that inspire my art. Before moving here, I lived on the Central Coast of California for over 30 years.

I believe there is one divine, loving intelligence that creates all that is and sustains all things, and I love to share this inspiration through my artwork, primarily painting and sculpture.

I grew up in a small town south of San Francisco. As a kid I loved shaping and soldering copper and brass into jewelry as well as sculptures of animals and insects.

My dad worked as a mechanical engineer, solving materials problems at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. My mother was a homemaker. She loved to read, study languages, knit and weave. She became an expert weaver, making clothing that I still have and wear, beautiful and elegant. I have two sisters a few years older than I am. The younger of the two taught art for many years. She encouraged me to keep a sketchbook, which I have, ever since. I’ve managed to retain almost all of them, a few got lost along the way.

My original objective was to create public art, with print-making and sculpture that could be seen by the general public, not just for private viewing. However I finally realized there’s nothing wrong with making art that brings light and life for private spaces as well.

The first significant art for public places that I did was the Ferro-cement horse now located in the San Luis Obispo, California, City County Library. The second was the life-sized Bear and Child for the fountain in the plaza of the San Luis de Telosa Mission that same city.

The “Stoic Horse”. I love this view of him.

I love all creatures and have a special fondness for Saint Francis, as he loved and talked to the birds and animals, knowing that they are included in God’s Allness as we humans are. It’s all there is. We are all a part of that. The only thing that separates us is our thinking, appreciation of life is what brings us together.

Thanks to my parent's love of art, I have studied sculpture, paintings, drawings, and prints in museums and books since my early childhood.

Over the years, my work and commissions include sculpture and painting, public sculptures, drawings, hand-colored etchings, and commercial illustration, short animations,  delightful things that I plan to do more of.

That’s all for now,

lots of love,

Paula
