"Chinle is the small town near Canyon de Chelly on the Navajo Reservation.
Sadly there is a great deal of poverty there, along with the great Navajo
sence of humor, and beautiful traditions. A friend and I stayed in a hotel there
for a couple of nights. There were several mama dogs skulking around the
doors, looking for handouts. This painting shows one of them, with a nice
smooth brown coat, wishing for something to eat,
and her shadow checking out a food bowl. Behind them is a spirit dog,
who knows that at another level, everything is okay, and all is well. "
